A brief introduction
My name is Chijioke Udogu, I enrolled in the backend stack of HNGi8 cohort.
I first came in contact with HNG Internship on Twitter late 2019. Mark Essien was being dragged on twitter for a remark he made about PHP - I can't really recall exactly what he said, but I know it didn't sit well with some techie tweeps back then. Along the line someone tweeted that Mark should be cut some slack, his internship program HNG Internship has done a whole lot for the African Tech ecosystem and his opinion on programming languages should be respected and taken as personal opinion, of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. So I got interested and did some basic research on HNG Internship Program, the result of the research culminated to me being a member of the HNGi8 cohort.
My journey to Tech has been anything but tumultuous, starting out with C programming language- thanks heaven a mentor told me to drop C and move to something much more contemporary- then to Python then finally HTML, CSS and JavaScript. So when i got the opportunity to join HNGi8 i grabbed it with both hands.
My plans
- Networking
I understand the power of networking, so my number one target here is to make as much friends as possible. Tech is a lifelong learning path and i feel its best to do Tech together as a team, a team of like-minded, focused and motivated individuals.
Growth
I plan to achieve a lot from this HNGi8 cohort, in terms of personal development. The pressure from HNG is legendary, I can not envisage a more conducive environment to step out of my comfort zone- here there are lots of developers who are more than willing to collaborate and share knowledge, a friendly but strict board of Mentors who are very approachable and are more than willing to respond to any question thrown at them. I see myself and every other serious person on this cohort growing in the following areas:
Working in a team.
Deeper and better understanding of chosen stack.
Contributing to opensource.
Exposure to real world software development tools.
Career growth
The plan is to either get a job working at Hotels.ng to further develop my skillset or get connected to other Software companies around the world.
Do you want to get into Tech?
For everyone out there who is trying to get into Tech, below are some tutorials to help you understand the basics of the bedrock technologies needed to get into tech.
W3Schools is a wonderful platform with a hands-on approach to software development for beginners. They cover a vast range of Technologies, from basics like HTML to intermediate technologies like React.js.
Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. This is a very in-depth article that takes you from beginner in git to intermediate in no time. It covers the very basics of git for github, installation procedures and getting started with the most popular commands.
Figma is a tool that helps UI/UX designers build better products as a team, design, prototype, and gather feedback all in one place. Its learning curve is not that steep.
Node. js is an open-source server side runtime environment built on Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine. It provides an event driven, non-blocking (asynchronous) I/O and cross-platform runtime environment for building highly scalable server-side applications using JavaScript.
Finally
HNG internship is the brainchild of Mark Essien and Neo Ighodaro. The HNGi8 Cohort is heavily supported by Zuri Internship an engineering-as-a-service platform with the aim of growing the best talents in the world of Tech all around the world.
They host internships too just like HNG but for beginners. to find out more about them click here
